Can you imagine a world where communication
was restricted to uttering a set of sounds which carried nothing more than the
general feeling of fear, hunger or danger, perhaps a few other general emotions
but nothing more complicated than that?
We are humans are uniquely gifted with our ability to scratch
lines and squiggles and dots on the surface of things and have those scratches
carry not just the general meaning of our sounds but nuances, within nuances,
within nuances.
I am profoundly appreciative of the ability to read the thoughts and feelings
of other people from other places and times. To be able to read a line written
500 years ago in a country 10,000 miles away and know the feelings of happiness
at a child's newly learned ability to simply tie his shoe. To be able to know
what it feels like, to remember the days of youth when, an afternoon was spent
traveling the little stream which flowed behind the local housing complex and
the joy of kicking over rocks to find salamanders. We are such lucky creatures
to have the ability to convey the most subtle of meanings through our use of language.
Perhaps only the cetacean's have a more complex form of communication and as far
as we know they don't have the ability to set their thoughts down in such a manner
that 200 years from now another cetacean can know what they felt or thought today.
